As the weather starts to get hot, humid and unpredictably wet at times, my recording sessions are about to begin too. I have mixed feelings about recording sessions. Perhaps my fear associated from my first album has got to do with it. There were no pro-tools (a super music editing tool) then, only ADAT (very much like a videotape)was available. Being that newbie me, I thought recording should be as straightfoward as my live performances at the folk lounge I used to perform. Of course, the numerous retakes proved me wrong. Vocals could not be edited. Out-of-pitch meant OUT OF PITCH. The feel’s wrong… Ok, what’s right? You should sound a certain way….hmmmm…demonstrate please? The numerous takes made me drained and robotic. What does it take to be good? Why am I here? Why did they sign me ? I really wondered to myself then. Being trapped in a mini studio for 8 to 10 hours was not enjoyable at all. Wasn’t singing supposed to be natural? So, probably that explains the silly fear of mine in studio recording.
With years gone by, few albums done, I’m beginning to feel more at ease. I find a couple of reasons that says why:
*I work well with my producers and engineers who are all GREAT to begin with…Other than their wonderful music talents, they are really just a bunch of guys who enjoy playing FIFA on PSP.
*I have alot more PARTICIPATION in my own album now. I can tell my boss frankly the songs I hate to do and the things I’d like to do. It’s harder to do that as a newbie unless u write all the songs and your boss looooooves them.
*Currently available are FANTASTIC tools which can speed up the working process and a lower possibility of me getting claustrophobic.
*As I get older, I acquire more WISDOM. Mistakes are inevitable, it’s not the end of the world.
*I remind myself constantly to listen to my heart, my INSTINCTS and my acquired IQ&EQ. Opinions are worthless when emotions, not actions are put into it.
*I LOVE singing and I know I can convey my stories well. Hey, I’m paid to tell everyone my stories, how great is that?
I’m beginning to feel better about my recording sessions now. Nitey.
